Nungwi — The Lively North

Nungwi sits at the island’s northern tip and is Zanzibar’s most developed beach area — plenty of restaurants, bars, and beachfront resorts, with calm, swimmable water year-round since it sits outside the tidal extremes that affect the east coast. It’s the best base if you want nightlife and options within walking distance.

Best for: First-time visitors, couples and groups who want a livelier base with plenty of dining and activities nearby.

Kendwa — Quieter, Same Coastline

Just south of Nungwi and sharing the same tide-friendly water, Kendwa is noticeably quieter and less built-up, with some of the island’s best sunset views. It’s an easy pairing with Nungwi if you want beach time without quite as much bustle.

Best for: Travelers who want Nungwi’s swimmable water without the crowds, and a slower pace.

Paje & the Southeast Coast — Kitesurfing and Laid-Back Vibes

Paje, along with nearby Jambiani and Bwejuu, is the center of Zanzibar’s kitesurfing scene, with steady wind and wide, shallow lagoons at low tide. Note the trade-off: the east coast has a dramatic tidal range, so swimming windows depend on the tide chart, not just the clock.

Best for: Kitesurfers, yoga retreats, and travelers who want a relaxed, less commercial feel.

Stone Town — Culture Over Beach

Zanzibar’s UNESCO-listed old town isn’t a beach destination at all, but it’s worth building into your trip — narrow alleyways, spice markets, and centuries of Swahili, Arab, Persian, and colonial history layered into one small peninsula. Most itineraries pair a night or two here with beach time elsewhere on the island.

Best for: History and culture, and as a short add-on rather than your main base.

If it’s your first trip and you want reliable swimming plus things to do nearby, Nungwi or Kendwa are the safest choices. If kitesurfing or a quieter, more local feel is the priority, look at Paje or Jambiani. Either way, spend at least a night in Stone Town — it’s a different side of Zanzibar entirely, and most visitors are glad they didn’t skip it.
