Tanzania and Kenya share a border, a migration, and a lot of the same wildlife — which is exactly why first-time safari planners get stuck choosing between them. Here’s an honest comparison.

Wildlife & the Migration

The Great Migration moves between Tanzania’s Serengeti and Kenya’s Masai Mara, so both countries offer access to it depending on the time of year. Tanzania generally holds the migration for more of the year (the calving season and much of the crossing season fall within the Serengeti), while Kenya’s Mara is best specifically from around July to October.

Crowds & Atmosphere

Tanzania’s parks are, on the whole, larger and less densely visited than Kenya’s more compact, heavily-touristed Masai Mara. If a quieter, more spread-out feel matters to you, Tanzania tends to have the edge — though Kenya’s smaller conservancies can offer excellent, less-crowded alternatives too.

Cost

Neither country is reliably cheaper across the board — it depends heavily on the specific parks, camps, and season you choose. Tanzania’s park fees and permit structures differ from Kenya’s, so cost comparisons are really only meaningful itinerary to itinerary.

Ease of Access

Kenya’s Nairobi is a major international hub with extensive direct flight options, which can make Kenya slightly more convenient to reach from some regions. Tanzania’s Kilimanjaro International Airport has grown significantly and serves the northern circuit well, with Zanzibar adding another well-connected entry point.

The Beach Add-On

This is where Tanzania has a genuine edge: Zanzibar sits right off the Tanzanian coast, making a safari-plus-beach itinerary remarkably easy to arrange without a long haul to a separate country.

Our Take

Both countries deliver an outstanding safari. If you want the option to pair it seamlessly with a beach escape, or you’re drawn to Tanzania’s larger, quieter parks, Tanzania is the stronger fit. If Nairobi’s flight connections work better for your route, Kenya is an equally excellent choice — you’re not choosing between good and bad, just between two different flavors of the same extraordinary experience.
