How Many Days Do You Need for a Tanzania Safari?
This is usually the first practical question after “when should I go” — and the honest answer is: it depends on what you want out of the trip. Here’s how to think about it.
The short version
- 3–4 days: A solid taste — enough for one or two parks and a real safari experience, but you’ll feel the pace.
- 5–7 days: The sweet spot for most first-time visitors — enough time to cover the northern circuit properly without rushing.
- 8–10+ days: Room to add Zanzibar, go further off the beaten path, or slow down and stay longer in fewer places.
Why trip length matters more than people expect
Tanzania’s parks are big, and driving between them takes real time — you’re not hopping between attractions five minutes apart. A rushed itinerary means more hours in the vehicle moving between parks and fewer hours actually watching wildlife. Conversely, adding even one extra day to a park you’re excited about (Serengeti especially) dramatically increases your odds of seeing the sightings you’re hoping for, since wildlife doesn’t work on a schedule.
A rough breakdown by trip length
3–4 days — Tarangire & Ngorongoro Crater, or Serengeti only
Best if you’re short on time or adding a safari onto a Kilimanjaro climb or beach trip. You won’t see everything, but you’ll get a genuine, high-quality taste of it.
5–7 days — The Northern Circuit
The classic route: Tarangire, Lake Manyara or Ngorongoro Crater, and the Serengeti. This is enough time to actually settle into the rhythm of a safari — early starts, long unhurried game drives, a proper night or two in each park rather than one and out.
8–10 days — Northern Circuit + Zanzibar
Add a few days on the beach at the end. This is a genuinely popular combination for a reason: the contrast between dusty plains and turquoise water makes for a trip that doesn’t feel like it’s all one thing.
10+ days — Deeper or wider
If you’ve got the time, this is where you can add the southern circuit (Ruaha, Selous/Nyerere), extend your Serengeti stay to chase the migration more precisely, or genuinely slow the pace down to 2–3 nights per camp instead of one.
The trade-off to keep in mind
More parks isn’t automatically a better trip. A common mistake is packing in too many destinations and spending more of the trip in transit than on game drives. If you only have 5 days, two well-chosen parks with two nights each will usually beat four parks with one night each.
Bottom line
If this is your first safari and you’re not sure, 6–7 days on the northern circuit is a strong default — long enough to feel unhurried, short enough to fit most schedules and budgets. From there, add Zanzibar if you want beach time, or extra nights in the Serengeti if the migration is the priority.
